Reed Deputation Poster

“Evangelism & Supporting Churches in the Negro River in the Amazon Jungle”
That’s the long title given by NAZARENE TEAMS to E TN W&W team to serve in Brazil

PRAISES AND REQUESTS SHARED WITH YOU:

PRAISES:
First, we must praise God for a district who carry a burden for Work & Witness, &
pray for teams, from beginning inspiration to the return.
Then, I know you’ll join me in praising God for the work He has gifted & inspired
Rachel Reed to do!  She, and Laura Dockery, working/ praying together, have
proven that they can be some of the most effective Work & Witness coordinators
in the Church of the Nazarene.  Don Moore, who is an amazing W&W coordinator,
agrees wholeheartedly with that assessment.  Let’s all continue to pray for Rachel
and Laura, as they both have sacrificed hours of their time for this project, even as
they are both dealing with the stresses of daily life.

REQUESTS: as we move from funding (DONE, THANKS BE TO GOD!) to preparing:
Jesus Film ARC  (to be delivered to us August 24):  pray that we can get it packed

efficiently so that it will travel to Brazil, ready for their team to set up for showing in
the Amazon interior.  Please pray for efficient packing and minimal baggage fees.

  • Pray for
Safe (long) trip to Manaus, Brazil…
all the way from departure (10/14) to safe return (10/25)
Team members: Rachel Reed, Laura Dockery, Kristie Greene, Ron DeWitt,
Mindi DeWitt, Scott & Debbie Blair, Loren & Alice Carey,
Bill & Martha Dawson, Jim & Teresa Hodge.

For effective, God-honoring ministry to those in Brazil, and to each other on the team
For health of team members to fulfill tasks (painting parsonage, delivering
    goods /
ministering to indigenous people up & down the Amazon River.
For spiritual/emotional connection of team, hosts & people receiving us as we
    minister
For spiritual and emotional health of team and hosts.

THANK YOU, EAST TENNESSEE, FOR PRAYING!

How Does YOUR Church Learn about Global Missions?
Some churches  have an NMI Service, with lesson, prayer for missions…
Others have a “Missionary Moment,” sharing  requests/ praises during a regular service.
Some churches share  through  NMI Central on phones of church families
Some use missionary videos to share about missions/ missionaries
Are children, youth, young adults, & seniors involved in missions at your church?
E TN DISTRICT NMI REALLY WANTS TO KNOW HOW YOU KEEP MISSIONS RELEVANT!
Please reply to this newsletter to share the ways your church engages  all age groups in
missions..just hit “reply,” and share your successes or your requests for help.  Please ID
yourself & your church.

Be sure to see today’s NMI Central, with it’s beautiful video and Kids’ Kaleidoscope
lesson about the Church in Portugal ….it’s a “Keeper”
+
Find great ppt. presentations, based on NMI Central at   http://etnmi.org/resources/

Don’t have access for PPT or a video?  Use your imagination!
There are many ways to involve our churches in learning about/ praying for/ investing in Global Missions.
Sometimes, churches can’t use videos/ppt. presentations, but that didn’t stop Gina Warren, NMI President
at Mt. Hermon Church!  She  recently shared about  the  “Low-budget, engaging way” Mt. Hermon
Nazarene used to create a missions lesson from  a single magazine story.”  They had no
ppt. or video…just a mission story from Nazarene Compassionate Ministries magazine.
But, they used their imagination, did some creative thinking, and came up with an unforgettable
missions experience for their congregation.  Be sure to read the  brief  story (attached, with some
great pictures of the  service.)

SPECIAL NEWSLETTER REQUESTING PRAYER FOR OUR VERY SPECIAL RETIRED MISSIONARY
PLEASE PRAY OUR PRECIOUS RETIRED MISSIONARY, REVEREND DR. GENEVA SILVERNAIL
I just had text from Alice Carey, Lenoir City NMI president who has become the very special companion for Dr. Geneva, accompanying her to speaking engagements on and off our district.

Alice just reported (8:29 est): “Geneva is in the emergency room. She has Covid and Pneumonia.  They’re doing a scan on her now because they’re concerned about blood clots. Her legs are swollen.”

I had received an email from Geneva earlier this week, with her “August Missionary  Thoughts” (attached).
In that email, Geneva shared how much she had enjoyed her cruise to Alaska  with her family, but how very tired the trip had left her.  She is depending on her E TN family to pray for her.

Ana Maria Crocker Diaz:  $4,560
As I’m writing this newsletter (Tuesday evening), I just received a message from Ana, whose words are in red:
I appreciate your prayers and all the love shown during my time with you. Yes, you are  my  extended family there in the United States as I am to you her in Guatemala

Jim & I went to meet Ana’s flight at the Chattanooga airport at 12:00 Monday night before the assembly.  Her plane was late, but her bubbly spirit energized us as we drove to the hotel.  Then, Ana HAD to be back at the airport at 6:00 AM Thursday, to clear customs, and start her long flight, with several connections, to the Dominican Republic, to speak to 800 students at the Meso-America youth congress. So, we were ready to go to the airport… Jim brought the car around to load Ana’s  luggage at the hotel, but the car WOULD NOT START!   We HAD to get Ana to Chattanooga!  Jim had me call Scott Blair.  Scott & Debbie soon appeared, bleary eyed, but sweet.  Jim went with them to the airport to quickly give Scott directions.  I stayed at the hotel to call Triple A…they were going to come in about 15 minutes….but Jim and Scott returned, NO Triple A, after over an hour!   As God would have it, Doug Hodge (from campground) appeared & offered to take Jim to Walmart to buy new battery.  Walmart sold Jim the battery, but said it would be 2 hours before they could come to hotel to install.  Doug Hodge could install battery, but left the wrench he needed at home.  Then, God sent Doug Nelson (Hill Top Church)..he “just happened” to have the needed wrench!  The battery was installed, and we made it to the Thursday morning assembly session…in time to hear most of Brother Ron’s report….
PRAISE THE LORD FOR PUTTING HIS PEOPLE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME…WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS!

Reverend Dr. Geneva Silvernail Ministers at Kids’ Mission Jamboree at Children’s Camp
Our beloved retired missionary below, laughing with her gift of baloney & loaf of bread!

Dr. Geneva Silvernail held the attention of more than 100 children in a hot tabernacle as she shared her story of crossing a crocodile infested stream in Africa.  She’s pictured above, laughing  while holding her gift of bread & baloney!  The NMI Jamboree theme was “Go Fish,” based on  Mark 1:17,
“Come, follow me, Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”  After listening intently to Dr. Silvernail, campers visited 8 “stations” all over the campground. One of those stations featured the  story of Jesus feeding the multitudes with a little boy’s lunch, then campers ate bread & fish (baloney cut in the shape of a fish on bread)!  We  later gifted Dr. Silvernail with a package of baloney & loaf of bread!
Her comment: ” What fun! One or two might be called to missions. Others to be pastors. Others to work side by side with both. It may just start with a fishy story.
